Medela Freestyle vs Pump In Style: Which One Is The Best?
As a mother-to-be approaching your due date, one of the considerations is whether you plan on breastfeeding your baby.
Following that line of thought, you’ll soon be thinking of breast pumping, especially if you’re a working mother who will need to return to your day job soon after giving birth, and directly nursing or
What are My Options?
Worry not! You’re not short of choices for breast pumps in the market today. However, it’s important to do a bit of research and read up on what’s available so that it helps you make an informed decision based on the breast pump features that would be useful to you (i.e a breast pump with 10 super cool features may not compare well against one that provides you with that one key feature that would be of most use to you).
One popular breast pump brand that’s recommended by many mothers today is Medela. So, let’s compare two of Medela’s popular breast pump models, the Medela Freestyle and the Medela Pump in Style…
Short of time? Don’t fret, just skip ahead to our comparison table for a quick 5-minutes summary.
What are the Similarities?
Both the Medela Freestyle and Pump in Style breast pumps are for double pumping.
This allows you to spend lesser time pumping (and more time with baby, YAY!) as milk can be cleared from both breasts at the same time.
Of course, if you’d like you could still use them as single pumps. Both the Medela Freestyle and Pump in Style also features Medela’s 2-Phase® Expression technology, which mimics a baby’s nursing rhythm; enabling more milk to be delivered in a shorter time.

While the Medela Freestyle breast pump is small in size, it packs a punch when it comes to features! It’s lightweight and comes with a rechargeable battery pack, hence making it extremely portable. The Medela Freestyle was also a winner of the JPMA Innovation Award.
A full battery charge should be able to get you through several days of pumping so you won’t be bogged down with having to sit near a power supply for your pumping sessions. Pair that with its accompanying hands-free accessory and you now have total convenience and mobility to multi-task around the house as you’re pumping!
If you’re constantly on the move or expecting to travel while breastfeeding, I’m sure the Medela Freestyle won’t disappoint.

The noise level is also relatively quiet compared to other pumps. The Freestyle model is equipped with a digital display that shows a timer, backlight and a memory capability to record preferred settings for your pumping sessions.
However, this breast pump is a bit on the pricier side, retailing at...

Comparatively, the Medela Pump in Style is friendlier on your wallet, but has its trade-offs.
It comes built into either a backpack or a shoulder bag so you will need to bring them along with you whenever you need to use the pump.
In order to use the pump, it also needs to be attached to a power outlet unless you use AA batteries, as the Medela Pump in Style does not come with a rechargeable battery pack.
There has also been some sharing from mothers (who had used this model before), that there’s sometimes tube condensation.
