The first surprise was how very compact this made the stroller. As much as I love the BOB, it's not any fun to pack into a car. Using the bag got it down to the size of a large duffel bag that was a heck of a lot easier to handle and stack with other luggage. Now we're going to use it for car trips, not just airline trips.
The BOB is easy to dissemble, reassemble, and put in the bag. Don't be daunted. With a few practice runs, my husband got it down to about a minute and 30 seconds. (Side benefit: it's also entertaining for your fellow airline passengers, especially if they are parents.) TSA agents were even better, breaking it down for the X-ray machine in 30 seconds flat.
We gate-checked it for airline travel on Alaska, United, and Southwest, and it survived perfectly. The only downside was that baggage handlers seemed to not immediately identify this as a gate-checked stroller that needed to be brought up on arrival, so twice we had to say "Have you seen our stroller? It's in a black bag." and wait around for a couple of minutes while they found it and brought it up. I might make a bright "STROLLER--GATE CHECK" tag for it next time and see if that helps.
The BEST surprise benefit was that having this bag also made it a lot easier to lug the car seat around in the airport. We put the baby in the stroller and put the car seat in the empty stroller bag. I admit that the bag didn't close very well and looked a little odd, but doing that DID allow us to drag the car seat like luggage instead of hand-carrying it for half a mile down long concourses. Convenience wins over style. That alone made it worth the price.
We had other issues with it, though. However, I am pretty sure it was mostly due to the particular airport, as we usually have some sort of trouble at all HI airports. The problem we had with it was that it did not have "STROLLER" marked on it and the airlines gave us a hard time with it when trying to gate check it because they thought we were trying to gate check a large piece of luggage, not a stroller. At one airport, we went to pick up our gate checked items and our stroller was nowhere to be found! After trying to track someone down, one person told us that it had been sent to baggage claim. Why they did that, I have no idea, but it was a HUGE deal because we still had to catch another connecting flight - we were not at our final destination. So, my husband went to baggage claim to get the stroller while I waited for him on the other side of the security checkpoint and after longer than it should have taken him to get back through security, he calls me and tells me that TSA is telling him that the airline won't allow us to check that large of a bag. My husband tries to explain that it is a stroller, but to no avail. So, I had to go yell at the TSA agents from the inside to get my husband back inside the airport so we could make our connecting flight. It was a huge mess and I was VERY upset. We thought by having our stroller in its own special bag would save us a lot of hassle and worry, but it just created more! If I had to do it over again, I would still get the travel bag but find some way to label it as a stroller in the most obvious way possible. The bag itself is very useful!
