Surprised & disappointed that it does tip over
I read the reviews on lots of different walkers and finally talked my husband into purchasing this expensive, high quality walker. My son is only 9 months old (and a month premature). He just started pulling up to stand and isn't really ready to use this as a walker, but I thought I could let him use it with my help. I was thinking that it would be nice to have something besides the coffee table or sofa (or me!) to pull up on. I must say he was excited the moment he saw it and immediately tried to pull up, which he was able to do by himself. He stood there holding on with the proudest smile on his face. (Photos above) But the next day he was standing and leaned to the side and it fell over, much to my surprise. So then I knew I needed to be ready to catch him if he leaned again. I still thought he was safe to pull up from behind, but the next time he tried he must have done something differently than before because it actually fell backwards. Now he doesn't want to use it and just wants to climb up on me because Mommy never falls over him. I have decided to not let him use this until he is really trying to walk, which of course is it's intended purpose. I should mention that my son is 22 lbs. and 29 inches long. I'm not sure if that is heavier than the other reviewers children? I will update this review when he is older, but it seems likely that it will still tip over if he isn't careful. I'm not sure that there is another walker that is more stable, so I might just have to put some weight in the storage compartment. I am still giving it 4 stars because it is well made. But I want to warn other parents to use this under very close supervision if your child is heavier or younger than recommended.Update January 2013: I did end up putting an 8 pound dumbbell in the toy storage area and that made the walker more stable and move slower until my child was walking good enough to not need it. But I have to say he was almost walking by himself by the time I didn't have to help him use it. It is very difficult to turn and it didn't help him get where he wanted to go. He could crawl there faster. He used it very little as a pre-walker. Honestly, he learned to walk by holding my hands outside and the walker was not a helpful tool. Not being able to crawl outside was a huge incentive to learn to walk and I walked him all over the yard for 2 weeks...then one day he just took off in the house by himself. My second child used it a little more, but still not a lot. She just learned by taking a step and falling, taking a step and falling. But before you decide to complete pass on the walker, I must add...now that my children are 3 1/2 years old and 24 months this walker gets used every single day. They push each other around in it and it's adorable! The push stuffed animals around. My son pretends it's a road compactor and smoothes out our carpet many times a day! It is well made and I will save it for my grandkids.
